President's Task Force on Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience

On September 24, 2019, President Robert Barchi, Rutgers' 20th president, announced the creation of the President’s Task Force on Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience. He charged the Task Force with developing a comprehensive Climate Action Plan for the university, identifying both pathways to achieving carbon neutrality and ways to reduce the university’s vulnerability to climate impacts.

The Task Force developed a framework for writing the Climate Action Plan, which is described in the Pre-Planning Report released in January 2020. This document lays out the challenge for Rutgers, examines what other leading universities have been doing, and offers a preliminary analysis of our current emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases. The Interim Report, released in July 2020, provides a more comprehensive analysis of greenhouse gas emissions and lays out an work plan for the Task Force leading to the delivery of a final Climate Action Plan in 2021 to President Jonathan Holloway, who succeeded President Barchi.

The creation of a Climate Action Plan for the university necessarily must engage the broader university community and interested stakeholders statewide, while enhancing Rutgers’ contribution to climate-positive economic development in New Jersey. The Task Force welcomes your feedback and participation.
